Kirk Farrar
Douglass “Kirk” Farrar LinkedIn
Kirk Farrar is a partner at Farrar, Hennesy & Tanner and the third generation of his family to practice at the firm his grandfather opened in Douglas in 1949. He's spent every year since 1997 standing up for injured Georgians, handling personal injury and workers' compensation claims on their behalf. He served on the Executive Committee of Workers' Compensation Claimants' Lawyers, and for twelve years he was the elected State Bar of Georgia board member for the Ware County District.
From the Factory Floor to the Courtroom
Kirk Farrar was 26 and supervising a production line for Kraft General Foods in Atlanta when the plant merged with Heinz and the Atlanta office closed. The company offered him a transfer to Pennsylvania. He turned it down and applied to law school instead.
"Having family as attorneys initially swayed me not to go into law. I wanted to try other things. I worked for Kraft for four years until the facility where I was employed merged with Heinz and the Atlanta office closed. I preferred not to transfer to Pennsylvania, and at 26, I decided that I would go into law after all. My experience with Kraft has greatly influenced my approach to the cases and clients I have. We enjoy looking out for the little guy."
— Kirk Farrar
He finished his finance degree at Kennesaw State College in 1991, graduated from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School in 1997, and made his way back home to Douglas to carry on his family's work as the third Farrar to practice at the firm.
A Legacy That Began in 1949
Arthur Curtis Farrar, Sr. had already been a schoolteacher and a U.S. Army Major before he opened the practice in Douglas in 1949. Kirk's father, Curtis Farrar, joined him in 1969 and went on to serve on Governors' Study Committees on workers' compensation and on the Boards of Directors of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Ports Authority.
Kirk joined in 1997. Today he practices alongside partners Matt Hennesy and Drew Tanner, and associate Andrew Tanner, who is carrying his own family's second generation into the firm.
Three generations, one address, and the same idea about who the work is for.
On Your Side When It Matters Most
Today, Kirk fights for people across South Georgia through some of life's hardest moments, from car and truck accidents to on-the-job injuries and wrongful death claims, focusing on personal injury and workers' compensation cases.
His work on the claimants' side of workers' compensation runs deep. He has served on the Executive Committee of Workers' Compensation Claimants' Lawyers and belongs to the Workers' Compensation Section of the State Bar of Georgia, which means he spends his days in a system, administered by the Georgia State Board of Workers' Compensation, that most injured workers only encounter once.
"Any type of injury claim tends to take a toll financially, physically and emotionally on the client and their family. I try and put myself in each of my clients' shoes to understand the stories from their perspectives. It is very rewarding to help people navigate the difficult path of an injury claim."
— Kirk Farrar
His finance background comes in handy. Kirk reads medical bills, wage records, and settlement math the way an insurance adjuster does, which makes it harder for a lowball offer to look reasonable.
Board Service and Giving Back
For twelve years, Kirk was the elected board member for the Ware County District of the State Bar of Georgia. He has also served First National Bank of Coffee County since 2005 on their Board of Directors.
The board that means the most to him started closer to home. Kirk went through and survived a cancer diagnosis at the age of 24. One of the firm's secretaries of more than 40 years had two grandchildren diagnosed with cancer. Her granddaughter did not survive. Her grandson still lives with the effects of the disease. Out of that came the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County. Kirk has sat on its Board of Directors since its inception in 2011.
"I enjoy serving on a board that makes palpable change in the circumstances of a family."
— Kirk Farrar
He put the same idea to Coffee County Magazine a different way:
"We are diligent in treating people with respect. You never know when what you do helps someone in their life to where they turn around and give back a hundredfold."
— Kirk Farrar
A Life Built Close to Home
Kirk lives in Douglas with his wife, Abbie. They enjoy spending time with their three adult children and traveling. They attend GracePointe Church, and most of what Kirk does outside the office happens within a few miles of the courthouse where he tries cases.
That is the point, as far as he is concerned. The people he represents are neighbors, friends and family. He runs into them at the grocery store and around town long after a case closes. It is important to him to provide the best possible legal service to each and every client.
